Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the complications of Diabetes Mellitus, and occurs due to damage of blood vessels of the Retina (light-sensitive layer of tissue of the eye)

When getting diabetes, the body loses its ability to use and store glucose, which results in glucose accumulation and tissue damage all over the body including both eyes.

Over the time, DM destroys small blood vessels in the retina, leading to leakage of blood and fluids which causes retinal swelling and blurry vision.

Usually diabetic retinopathy affects both eyes, the longer a person has diabetes, the more likely they will develop diabetic retinopathy and if left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness
